Basic
Education Exchange (BEE) Workshop
January-September 2002
The
BEPS team was sought to help coordinate the Africa Bureau’s
Basic Education Exchange Workshop, which brought together
representatives from each of USAID ’s education programs
throughout Africa, Ministry of Education partners, the USAID/Washington
Africa Bureau’s education team, the USAID/Washington
Economic Growth, Agriculture and Trade Bureau, and other national
stakeholders. The forum brought to light the ideas and challenges
shaping the future of African education.
The agenda for the five-day workshop was designed
in close collaboration with the USAID Africa missions that
include education programming in their field activity and
was held from September 29 through October 4, 2002 in Addis
Ababa, Ethiopia.
The workshop program focused on recruiting and
retaining a trained teaching force, alternative education
delivery strategies, and management and implementation issues.
The goals of the workshop were to encourage the sharing of
information and experiences across country programs, to expose
participants to the education sector, to acquire new skills
to more effectively manage and implement programs, to strengthen
ties and nourish collaboration between USAID and in-country
partners and to continue to hone programmatic approaches.
Highly interactive and participatory sessions
provided an opportunity for country teams to work together
to address specific challenges while sharing research and
tools with colleagues. Participants in the Basic Education
Exchange Workshop left with renewed energy, information and
tools to pursue their education activities throughout the
continent.
