Planning
Strategies to Combat Child Labor and Trafficking
Cote D'Ivoire
April 2002
The
BEPS child labor team conducted a planning analysis in Ivory
Coast with an eye to developing educational and other intervention
strategies for children working under abusive labor circumstances,
predominantly in cocoa production. The analysis closely examined
the extent of child labor in Ivory Coast, exploring the most
serious impediments to children’s participation in
education programs and identifying the programs and activities
in place
that address the needs of working children. The project was
initiated with a view to developing a pilot project to provide
educational opportunities to working children.
A key element
within the planning analysis was to identify potential nongovernmental
agencies or organizations
that
could assist the Sustainable Tree Crops Program (STCP) in
designing integrated child labor strategies to be funded
by international donors. STCP is a USAID-funded public-private
partnership that seeks to raise the income and quality of
life in cocoa-producing communities.
The planning analysis
was completed; however, due to the onset of civil strife
in Ivory Coast, follow-on activities
have been suspended. Creative Associates hopes to reinitiate
activities in Ivory Coast as soon as internal circumstances
permit.
