Building
Bridges to Peace and Prosperity
August 2003
In
August 2003, BEPS helped USAID bring together its partners
from many countries, many sectors, and many organizations
to participate in its biennial education and training
workshop. The 2003 workshop, Building Bridges to Peace
and Prosperity: Education and Training for Action, built
on the success of 2001’s No One Left Behind workshop.
The workshop was designed for USAID staff, USAID partners,
and other development practitioners to exchange information,
learn about new tools and technologies, and explore how
the use of education and training can contribute to the
success of development strategies in other sectors. The
workshop was held August 11-15, 2003 in Washington, DC
at The George Washington University’s Marvin Center.
Recognizing that human capacity development forms the foundation
for social stability, effective local governance,
sustained economic growth, sound agriculture and healthy
communities, this workshop underscored the role that
education and training play as a bridge to collaboration
across sectors. Multi-sectoral collaboration has proven
essential to promoting effective development strategies
that support society’s quest for peace and prosperity.
Through the workshop, participants collaborated with hundreds
of colleagues from around the world working
in all sectors of development. Participants shared vital
information about program successes and lessons learned,
discussed new trends and insights, and developed relationships
that will help to build the bridges that contribute to
greater peace and prosperity. Participants became prepared
to take a leadership role in applying the knowledge that
they’ve gained to strengthen and expand the impact
of their work. USAID staff and partners were able to
return to their posts renewed, enriched, and energized
by what was learned in frank and enlightening discussion
sessions.
